Born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, FERD, actual name âClifford Jeanâ, says he has been musically inclined for many years. He goes on to say â I used to write R&B songs from when I was about 11 years old. I used to let my older cousin and friends sing âem. It was fun because as kids, even as adults, we all like to portray famous people like athletes and singers so it made me happy to play a part in that. When I was, like, 16 years old I wrote this song called â De Ja Vuâ for my homeboy and his singing group. They loved it. As a matter of fact, they performed it for some guy, I canât remember his name he wanted to manage the group and have me write songs for them. I was real cool with that. It was all good, but, then, my focus was beginning to change. I was beginning to focus on trying to survive.
Although FERDâs musical talents weâre beginning to be noticed, it was hard for the young man to stay concentrated on writing songs and keeping up with his school work with the fact he was fighting constantly in his neighborhood. âit was a fucked up situation. I canât really explain how it even startedâ¦.
âIn my early years I seen a lot of the kids I used to hang with disappear. I didnât know what happened to them. Then to find out they weâre getting locked up for selling drugs, stabbinâ folks up, robbinâ- it hurt my heart. But as time moves on so do you, ya know. Believe, though, when my niggas came back home, I was like â whatâs goodâ nigga!!!â, how you been, man!!!â- showinâ love. But you wouldnât believe how funny actinâ dudes weâre after doing a little time. Niggas came back lookinâ at me like Iâme the one who committed the crime for not gettingâ locked up when they did. Like what the fuck I look like going to school and getting my education and shit. Givinâ me that â Iâm in the hood, so behave like itâ type attitude, ya know. What I needed to do was start killinâ, dealinâ, and robbinâ dudes in order to belong here. At that point in my life, I wasnât with all that and for that reason I was fighting, getting jumped and shot at. On some shit like â if you wonât act like us, you canât be around usâ.
So after awhile with things like that, I lost the inspiration to R&B music. R&B music was mostly about love and I wasnât feeling too- loving. I tried to continue to write but it was sounding so repetitive. So eventually Rap became my source of expression. My life was making a big change for the worse. Basically, the things I was trying to stay away from and getting into fights for not doing, I started to embrace. Why, I really canât say. All I know is things I never acknowledged, I was
Acknowledging, things I never thought Iâd do, I was doing, and the life I was living was now fit predominantly to be explained in Rap. So here I am- Rappingâ.
