"It is always a happy occasion when a new instrumentalist appears on the jazz scene who revitalizes his or her instrument and points towards the future. While there are many trombonists around, only a select few are offering new ideas. Chris Dempsey, who makes his recording debut as a leader on Onward, has the technique to play whatever he thinks of, a fertile imagination, and a warm sound. He does not sound like any of his predecessors and his compositions are fresh and new."
