Details:
Hillrod is a four member rock/metal/blues/funk band based in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The band was founded by Rodger Chennault (guitar) and Ryan Kurzmann (drums), who played together for four years whenever they had the time. After several bass players, they finally found Joe Hawkins who livened up the sound with his signature funk riffs. Kindra Mavis, the newest member of Hillrod, brings new spice to the music's sound with high intensity vocals. Hillrod is a newly coined slang term referring to someone who moved from flat land to the hills, or a non-indigenous hillbilly. The music of Hillrod is a mixture of influences from heavy metal, rock, funk, folk, and even a little punk. One fan described Hillrod as "what would happen if Babes in Toyland and the Black Crowes got in a fight." Some describe Hillrod as Evanescence with more balls while others draw comparisons with Lenny Kravitz, Janis Joplin, Alice in Chains, or Tool. The band strenuously hates these comparisons, along with comparison to any other band. Hillrod sees every song as a unique entity, and one can find any number of styles in any one song.
"With every other band you listen to, they play three songs before you notice that the first one is over," guitarist Rodger Chennault repeatedly says. "All our songs are different. You're gonna know when we change songs."
Hillrod has played many performances in Northwest Arkansas and has even had two forays into Springfield, Missouri at the Rockwell. The band has played venues such as JR's Lightbulb Club, The Music Hall, and Wild On in Fayetteville as well as several festivals around the state.
