In 1880, Jack the Ripper is terrorizing London residents. Mr. Slade (Jack Palance), a mysterious and quiet Pathologist, is seeking a room to rent and some space to run some experiments. He finds a room at Mr. William and Helen Harleys house. He begins acting strangely when he falls in love with the landlords daughter, Helen Harley (Frances Bavier). Towns people are on edge and suspicions arise. Mr. Slade is always in the attic with his experiments but seems to be away from the house when Jack the Ripper strikes.
