Details:
Bradford Hoopes plays solo piano which draws on a wide array of musical influences. He grew up in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area and has been playing the piano since the age of 3. He studied classically and received his Bachelor's degree in music at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1987. While at Dartmouth, Bradford studied with rhythm master Hafiz Shabazz, ethnomusicologist Bill Cole, jazz pianist Fred Haas, electronic musician/composer Jon Appleton and experimental musician/composer Christian Wolff, and performed with the eclectic ensemble Moonrocks throughout the New England area. After Dartmouth, Bradford continued to perform in the area with the Hafiz Shabazz-led Bala Bala Rhythm Band. In 1990, Bradford headed west and began almost a decade of living and playing all over, from Phoenix to Los Angeles to San Diego to Seattle, with artists such as Deb Pasternak, Mr. Jones & The Previous, JB & The Muse, the late Josh Clayton-Felt, and China Rose. In early 1998, Bradford was driving through Kansas, his truck broke down, and he's been in Lawrence ever since. In his time there already, Bradford has played on over a dozen records, with artists such as The Yards, Brent Berry, The Secondhands, Malarkey, Randy Kaplan, The EZ Pieces, and Busy Signal, and has shared the stage with John Scofield, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Jazz is Dead, the North Mississippi Allstars, Strangefolk, Honeypot, The Slackers and Toots & The Maytals. Bradford continues to teach, compose, and perform with many local and regional acts.
