Details:
Decoration came together when long-time friends Stuart Murray (vocals), Steve Taylor (drums) and Steven Dickinson (guitar) from Bolton hooked up with Sam Noble (bass), they utilised their collective gambling skills, and in particular the winnings from a high odds bet on Cyfor Malta in the Thomas Pink Stakes to fund their initial demos, named in homage to the race that got them into the studio The Thomas Pink Sessions were the bands first, self released offerings. These were immediately picked up by John Peel and the blue touch paper was lit.
Rambling casually onto the scene via a late night phone call and subsequent session for John Peel, they became the highest ever placed unsigned band in the great mans festive fifty chart. Radio play and sessions from Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens, Gideon Coe and Jane Gazzo followed along with sessions for independent stations across the country.
This recording, their debut album, was originally released in the UK and Europe in October, 2005 as Donât Disappoint Me Now, the U.S. version is re-titled as Donât Disappoint Us Now and has extra tracks lifted from a session for the Peel inspired Dandelion Radio and two early demo versions of album tracks. The record is presented with brand new artwork by long time band collaborator and artist Chin.
Decoration have since recorded and released a second album, Flippant, and currently have their third eagerly anticipated album entitled See You After the War recorded and awaiting release later this year.
What theyâre saying about Decoration:
âDecoration ooze nothing but heartfelt English songwriting, circa 1989, when âindieâ was really independent and Morrissey was a post-Smithsian kingâ¦itâs like a malevolent Pulp.â (Record Collector)
"Each and every track is a classic example of angst-fuelled, melodic guitar rock done right, and this album is of the same quality as early efforts by U.K. heavies The Wedding Present, Bunnymen, and even The Smiths." (The Big Takeover)
âItâs as ace and relentlessly upbeat as all pop should be, with added depth and honest-to-god emotion.â (The Big Issue)
âDecoration thunder in with an energising rush of â80s indie-pop spontaneity built around a Smiths-like core of smart wordsmith Stuart Murray and thrillingly vibrant guitarist Steven Dickinson but, thankfully, without Morrisseyâs massive shoulder chip.â (Mojo Magazine)
âThis is perfect pop music, created by four men with loads going on in their brains, their hearts and their pants. All pop music should be this clever, this sincere, this gut wrenching and this noisy.â (Decode Magazine)
