The elusive, reclusive Dr. Fong.....been around forever, left for years but came back writing soulful blues and rippin' rockers! Primarily Dr. Fong is a songwriter/guitarist and very bashful singer and the infamous doc can be seen frequenting the back alleys of lower Broad and little blues clubs around Music City. He prolifically writes rock, blues and a bit of country when it wakes him up in the middle of night. Typically Fong plays and sings all cuts on the tracks you hear with the exception of Madjack's pounding percussion contributions. Once in awhile though some of doc's buds join in and the results are truly cool!......................................................................................................................................................................................................... Starting out way, way back in the early 60's Dr. Fong aka Jay Wilfong is a self taught musician and will be the first to admit smilingly that he is totally musically ignorant. I'm sure some of those Nashville cat musicians would be the first to agree with that BUT....there is a method to his madness. Wilfong's first efforts in the studio date way back to 1974 when the somewhat legendary Smokin' Bats at Campton's vinyl was born and bred at the famous 700 West Studio in New Palestine, Indiana. The band was called Primevil and the very limited released album is extremely prized by rock and roll vinyl LP collectors around the world..................................................................................................................................................................................................... Wilfong's next offering was the mysterious Buccaneer album released in 1980, which is also now prized by collectors. The album was limited in release numbers to 5000 copies of what has been come to be known as the "Gold Logo" version. The first version of the "Red Logo" album was never released simply because the good doc did not like the way it looked. There are less than 20 of the Red Logo Buccaneer albums known to still exist.......................................................................................................................................................................................................... After Buccaneer and the loss of fortune and family Wilfong did not touch a guitar or listen to music for 23 years, only to begin again in 2003 as therapy in attempts to battle deep depression. During the period between 2003 until present music has poured out of his soul and blues in particular as Dr. Fong has written and recorded prolifically.................................................................................................................................................................................................... Having never pitched his songs to other artists until early 2008 an up and coming country artist picked up rights to record a warped humor offering of Fong's as a featured song on a forthcoming album. Who knows? Maybe there is sunhine on the horizon for one of music's best kept secrets?.................................................................................................................................................................................................. Wilfong resides near Nashville and "hand records" all of his tunes at a mysterious little studio he laughingly calls Mystery Isle. If one could actually locate the place you would see him laying down one track at a time, from guitar tracks, bass tracks, lead vocals and harmony arrangements. Many times a song will be conceived and recorded spontaneously and then tweaked over a period of time. Hundreds and maybe thousands of work CD's are scattered around the Mystery Isle control room.................................................................................................................................................................................................... Dr. Fong almost always works alone because he can be an absolute ass to work with due to a maniacal and obsessive desire to play/write/record the perfect track with the perfect feel. Many friends prefer to just stay away and rightfully so. Fong will be the first to admit that he is difficult at best when he is in the studio. Outrageously and fiercely independent Fong remains single ten years after the end of his second and he says his last marriage. Who knows though when some sweet young thing will make him reconsider?.............................................................................................................................................................................................
