With a keenly observing eye, Rachel Gaudry delivers a fine balance of soulful lyrics and catchy melodies in her songs that are at once specific and subtle, reflective and down-to-earth.

Born in Canberra, Australia the youngest of nine, Rachel started playing piano at the age of 6. At 11, she won a music scholarship to a boarding school in rural New South Wales. At 17, she lived in France for a year then backpacked through Europe, before heading back to Australia to study jazz performance majoring in voice, for three years at the Canberra School of Music.

An avid listener, Rachel grew up influenced by many styles of music but predominantly classical piano, musicals, her older siblings' record collections which included artists like Cat Stevens, The Beatles, Everything But The Girl, The Police, Eurythmics, Nick Drake and Neil Young, and later, jazz.

In her late teens Rachel developed a particular affinity for the intensely personal and inspiring music of artists like Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones, Suzanne Vega, Van Morrison and Elvis Costello. Inspired, she started performing her own songs when she moved to Sydney in 1995. Meanwhile she was singing in various jazz bands, but eventually went back to her piano roots playing solo piano bar gigs as a way to make a living and support her various creative musings.

In 1999 Rachel met drummer extraordinaire Chad Wackerman (Frank Zappa, James Taylor, Allan Holdsworth) and they began work on her debut album 'Leaving Traces', with Chad stepping in as producer (he also plays on the record). The album is a collection of thoughtfully-crafted songs infused with lush acoustic textures and a softly poetic lyrical edge, and presents Rachel as a strikingly fresh and soulful talent.

Rachel has won several prizes for her music and songwriting including a songwriting travel grant/development award in the Johnny Dennis Music Awards and two Australia Arts Council International Pathways grants. Outside of her native Australia, she has performed in the USA, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore, and her music has been featured on various radio and TV broadcasts in Australia, Canada, USA, Spain and Taiwan.

Rachel is currently embroiled in (and loving) a one year full-time film composing course at the prestigious Australian Film Television and Radio School. She intends to get back to songwriting and recording another album soon after she returns to normal hours in 2008.
