Details:
Nathan is a piano player and songwriter, born and raised in Detroit. He studied 12 years of classical piano with Gertrude Schueller, and 2 years of jazz with Cliff Habian. He currently lives in Israel, where he writes in a bomb shelter.

Sound of Sunrise is Nathan's second CD. It was recorded in Studio 21 in Raanana, Israel, conveniently located 200 meters from Nathan's home.

A few words from Nathan about the music and the CD:

These songs are inspired by life and imagination, and things I see and experience daily, riding my bike through orange groves and along the Mediterranean coast. Some are simple piano melodies, others have lyrics.

⢠Bird of my Morning. This has been brewing in my head for years. It was actually inspired by a real bird, the Bulbul, which sings the most beautiful songs. The song starts with a lyrical phrase referring to dusk and dawn, which is based on a thought by Kate Thompson, an artist and writer in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

⢠Knowing You. Did your wife or girlfriend ever say "If you really knew meâ¦"? Mine doesn't, but that phrase and a few hours on the beach resulted in this song.

⢠By the River. This is an instrumental piece that didn't quite make it onto my first disk, "A Day without a Funeral".

⢠Amulet. I wrote this song for my dear friend, Cheryl Kessler, who was suffering from cancer. She died this year, and the world is a sadder place without her.

⢠Cement walls. A piano piece.

⢠The Mountain. I've spend a fair amount of time on and near Mt. Rainier. A bit of quiet time on a mountain, in the woods, by a stream, or in the desert, is highly recommended.

⢠A Reason. An instrumental piece that was meant to have lyrics. The lyrics remain in a drawer, waiting for the right tune.

⢠Just a Note. Written in 30 minutes during a ride through a local citrus grove after a rain shower. Dig the cello solo.

⢠Flower Best. I sent a friend a bunch of photos from a hike, and she liked the picture of the flower best.

⢠Sound of Sunrise. I know, it's a little depressing, but haven't you had these kinds of thoughts? Meanwhile, the rest of the CD is upbeat enough to make up for this one, I hope.

⢠Dull and Gray. What do you do when the world looks dull and gray?

Thanks to my family for not minding my retreating into the bomb shelter for hours at a time to work on old and new material. Thanks to the whole gang at Studio 21: Smadar, Ziggy, Zvika, and especially Guy Litvak, the sound engineer, who really invested a lot of energy and creativity in bringing my ideas to life, making them sound better than I thought possible, and encouraging me to focus on the good in my music.

The album art is the photo Coos Bay Sunrise, taken in Coos Bay, Oregon by Jim Corbin (jscorbin@comcast.net). Thank you Jim for sending me this beautiful sunrise photo. Thank you to Lea Cohen of Pimento Web Design for her help with the "album art".
