Details:
If you're familiar with H. Jacks other recordings, Jack Oil will come as a bit of a surprise. First off, there are no Lifters on this CD! Jack's solo for most of this; strumming, singing, and whistling his way through a lifetime of tunes. Revisiting his youth, and songs written over a number of years, this disc captures a different side of Jack. Although his blues and jazz ideas do pop up, the focus here is songwriting with a simple guitar/ voice approach. From the motownish funky 'Darlin' to the circular word play of "Retina", the dark rock of 'Underground' to the lazy blues 'Watch the Fool World Rush By' these are great songs.
Two of Jacks friends, and longtime musical companions, lend their talents to a few tracks. Guitar master Dan Lund brings his unmistakable custom Fender Telecaster sound to four country flavored tunes. Janie Miller adds her fantastic voice to the achingly beautiful 'I'm Sorry Again'.
Keeping things interesting, Jack adds some short instrumental bits into the mix. Playing the Fender Rhodes electric piano (who knew?) we're led through the continuously evolving Sunlight series. Picking up his bass, we've got two interpretations of a blues, both fingerpicked - as if it were a guitar. His 'Spring 129' composition, is offered up here in a bass guitar/ whistling arrangement.
This is a great disc you'll want to listen to again and again. Jack has, once again, created an enjoyable and interesting musical statement. This is a fine addition to Hydraulic Jack's library of discs.
