This is the fourth release on the abzu label, entitled SOUND REASON/REASON SOUND, a duet between violinist Mike Khoury and soprano saxophonist/bass clarinetist Piotr Michalowski. These musicians have been playing and recording together for a number of years in southwestern Michigan, in duets as well as with many other people. This release is a follow-up to their previous duet cd on the Friends and Relatives label entitled Shards, which was well received and was even listed as one of the ten top releases of the year by Bill Smith in Coda. Of that recording, one reviewer wrote: âShards also plays with our expectations of time. Though these improvisations are non-pulsed, nonetheless there is a sensation of time passing at a well-defined and patient pace; there is a shared sense of timing, a rhythm of events. These improvisations are each unique occurrences that move forward in a stream, and rarely refer back in time to previous events; many ideas flicker to the surface. Therefore, close and attentive listening is advised! It will be interesting to trace the trajectory of this empathetic duo as they continue to refine and expand their sound."
The present release does just that. The tonal palate has been extended further, and Michalowski plays bass clarinet on some tracks, in addition to the soprano saxophone.
