Details:
The origins of Monk License have been the subject of many rumors and much speculation in the industry. A few facts are known. Monk License first appeared in public in about 2005 and developed a reputation for playing tight, energetic sets at private parties in Silicon Valley, California. Bootleg tapes of these performances began appearing shortly after the first performances and have been widely distributed. It is well know that the band was asked to perform at several leading Bay Area venues and alternative rock festivals over the last several years but, to date, Monk License has eschewed sharing the stage with other bands. Instead, the band appears in small venues with notice of these performances typically spreading through internet blogs a few hours or even minutes before the band takes the stage. Tapes of some of the earliest Monk License performances include an unidentified female vocalist who is rumored to have been a former opera singer now in federal prison in California. (There is no evidence, however, than a female opera singer was incarcerated in California during the relevant period.) Other than this unidentified female singer, the membership of the band has remained constant: Jonathan "Colonel" Sanders on keyboards and vocals, Jeff "Thumbs" Ostrow on bass and vocals, Jason "T-Bone" Bussey on drums and percussion, Pat "Tail Pipe" King on guitars and vocals. Monk License recorded a demo several years ago that has been downloaded an estimated 500,000 times from various no-pay music websites. Currently, the band is reported to be recording a second demo somewhere in Oakland, California.
