The self-released debut full-length from Chicago's subversive beatmeister Instigator. From abstract to bombastic and from tense to dense, Used Materials wriggles and writhes from start to finish.
It crystallized from more than two years of collecting original source material in a variety of formats, mixing them into each other, collecting more material, remixing everything again...
The result is a lo-fi/hi-fi hybrid of intricately broken beats, filtered field recordings and caustic synth grooves - all strung together with a sarcastic knack for sampling. And while the sound is heavily machinated, there is obviously an unnerved human at the controls.
Used Materials features unique cameos and appearances by members of fellow Chicago acts including Epectir, Kim, Molar Mill, Quatre Tete, Ten Tongues and Timeout Drawer, with friends from Pal:ndrom (NY) and The Mass (SF). Also features rappers Sneaky Guy and FlyingEarOfCorn, ace slide guitarist Johnathan Winfield Basil Gorlewski, incendiary voice-mailer Pat Clap, two cats, a dog and more.
