Brian Owens is rapidly earning a reputation as one of the most promising young vocalists on todayâs music scene. At the age of 28, Owens has already shared the stage with many notable performers: Peter Martin (Chris Botti, Dianne Reeves), Peter Mayer (Jimmy Buffett, the Peter Mayer Group), Christine Brewer, Herlin Riley (Cassandra Wilson, Wynton Marsalis), Reuben Rogers (Dianne Reeves), Greg Hutchinson (Betty Carter, Dianne Reeves, Steely Dan), and Neal Caine (Harry Connick Jr.). Owens has opened for jazz legend Ramsey Lewis, smooth jazz artists Boney James and Spyro Gyra, and recently presented workshops and concerts at St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. Additionally, he has been a featured soloist with members of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
Brian has made television appearances on ABCâs âGood Morning Americaâ, BETâs âJazz Discoveryâ program and the Emmy Award-winning, âThe Wayne Brady Showâ. Additionally, Owens spent three years as a lead vocalist with the United States Air Force Band of Mid-America at Scott Air Force Base, IL. That experience helped Brian to greatly expanded his repertoire and begins to perfect his signature style of complex, yet understated vocal interpretation.
Like many gifted vocalists raised in the church, Owens has strong ties to his faith. His first musical training came from his father, a crooner in his own right. After his experience signing with the Air Force Band, Owens experienced a major turning point in his career in 2005. He was invited to sing at a tribute for Dianne Reeves and was also invited to participate in her master class and performance at Carnegie Hall in April 2006. âWorking with Dianne Reeves and playing at Carnegie Hall was an amazing experience,â recalls Brian. âI truly believe it was a defining moment in my progression as a vocal musician, to work with and learn so much from everyone involved and to then share that with a live audience.â
Most recently, Brian completed an EP of original compositions entitled, The Cole Sessions, written in honor of his newest inspiration, his first-born son, Ellington Cole Owens. The album celebrates life, love and legacy through soulful compositions rooted in traditional soul, jazz, gospel, and folk -- with a touch of the contemporary as well.
Owens holds a B.A. degree in Music from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and in fall 2007, served as senior lecturer in the field of African-American Music History. Today, Owens serves as a guest lecturer and is currently developing an outreach program designed to nurture and help develop young artist, entitled, The Legacy Campaign.
He is currently finishing plans for the release of a full CD or original material in late 2008, and is booking tour dates that will carry the message of The Cole sessions and The legacy Campaign throughout the nation
