WHAT IS ALL AT ONCE?

Inner Orchestra's first studio album, All at Once, released in 2003, features 16 fresh original tunes, with the compositional creativity of all seven members of the band represented. The new tunes range from the frenetic Indo-bluesgrass-rock concoctions of guitarist, Michael Daves, to the soulful, Otis Redding-meets-John Coltrane melodies of tenor saxophonist, Emiliano Garcia. All at Once samples trombonist Benjie Messer's musical comments on the quality of "soul," reminiscent of Charles Mingus and Eddie Harris. You'll hear tributes to James Brown and the Meters composed by drummer Justin Tomsovic, whose grooves create a world in which not dancing is absurd; trumpeter Adam Scott chanelling the muse through the trumpet AND saxophone; a meditative rumination of bassist Ben Goodale; and the rally cry of alto saxophonist, Michael Pisapia, whose melody "All at Once" urges y'all to get together now, to make some noise, and to realize that the good life is right here, in the present.

WHO IS INNER ORCHESTRA?

Inner Orchestra shows are high-energy parties of danceable funk, with intricate compositions and powerful improvised solos that draw in jazz fans as well as booty-shakers. Their super-tight horn section (trumpet, trombone, and soprano, alto and tenor saxophones) over slamming grooves (guitar, bass, and drums) has drawn comparisons to James Brown, Tower of Power, and the Brand New Heavies, but Inner Orchestra has a fresh sound all its own.

Inner Orchestra was born in the colleges of western Massachusetts, where members spent their days studying jazz and their nights playing parties. They've been making a name for themselves since members graduated in 2000. Their first studio album, All at Once, has received excellent reviews both regionally and nationally.

Unmistakably original, Inner Orchestra's music is accessible and appeals to both young and old. Fans have come to expect excursions into Carribean and African rhythms, parades through town, and even free jazz. When the horns take a break, the rhythm section hits hard as a power trio, and when the rhythm section takes a break, the horns erupt in New-Orleans-style polyrhythms- but it always lands back in the funk.
