Dylan meets the Beatles.
10 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Acoustic, POP: Beatles-pop
Details:
Thomas Itty's debut cd The Dark Edge Of The Light proves there's still great, original pop/rock music being made. A singer/songwriter in the tradition of Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Tom Petty, Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen, Thomas Itty's songs are intelligent and evocative.
Thomas was born in India and spent his youth in the South Indian city of Bangalore. His songs have a maturity that suggests that the songwriter has been doing this for a while. Thomas Itty has been writing songs for over twenty years. "I was about seventeen when I wrote my first song and I can still remember the wonder and excitement I felt at having found this ability within me," he says. "My best friend Krishna and I would get together and jam every night in the garage of my parents house. We were going to be as big as The Beatles..."
It's taken twenty years to release his first record. "There weren't too many opportunities for rock singer/songwriters in India those days. You couldn't make any money unless you wanted to play covers in bars and nightclubs. I never wanted to do other people's songs and I still don't," he says. Instead, Thomas went into advertising -- first working as a copywriter to finally owning his own design agency in Bangalore. In 1989, Thomas came to the US to study towards a Bachelor's degree in Communications Arts. He later went on to do his graduate studies in Media Studies. He's also worked for the past eight years as a new media specialist.
Thomas began seriously thinking about recording this CD in early 2000. By this time, he had quite a large collection of songs to choose from. Thomas met with Steve Hanson, an accomplished musician and independent producer and began recording in late 2000 at Steve's studio, Hi-Top Productions.
The Dark Edge Of The Light can be considered a concept album. "Once I decided on the title track, I looked for other songs I'd written which were complementary to it. I then changed some of them slightly to fit the overall mood of the album," he says. As the title suggests, this is a collection of songs which explore the human condition  hope, despair, joy, sorrow, love, hate, faith, cynicism, death, life.... From the high-energy, twin-guitar driven opening track, New Millennium and the sleepy, acoustic, slice-of-life, Waiting, the unusual and very funky, Strange Days, the classic rock composition The Dark Edge Of The Light, to the lyrical masterpiece 121 South Highland Avenue, this is an album that grips the soul as only real art can.
