Tim Fast
singer/songwriter

Nearly forty years ago, John Lennon sang a song called 'Working Class Hero". In it he lamented the ills of a repressive society, and praised the determined individuals who endured.Tim Fast is a songwriter from Minnesota, is a man who has fought through many of the battles often associated with life and his music and message are both stronger for it. In an industry that is onsessed with the quick fix, the pre-packaged, and the willingness to follow trends, some might say that Tim has already won by continuing to do what he loves. He has been nominated and received many awards for his craftyness in songwriting but he would, however, argue that the best is yet to come. Recent signs are certainly pointing in that direction. This much about his story is clear: Tim Fast has been tried, and his music remains true.
Tim's early experience with music was both successful and frustrating. He has played guitar, harmonica and mandolin in groups from Minnesota and California off and on for nearly 25 years.Mostly cover bands with some original music blended in playing folk, southern rock, rock and blues. He recieved full custody of his three sons in 1984 which made it difficult to pursue his music. In 1993 his group 'Second Wind' had to turn down an offer to tour as an opening act for 'The Mavericks' because of their family obligations and disbanded in 1994. After a half a dozen bands and years of frustrating band break ups Tim was left feeling bitter. He resolved to leave his guitar in the corner, as it had become a bittersweet reminder of what might have been. It was around time Tim would discover the will to keep pursuing his dreams.
In 1996, Tim's mother had suddenly died. She left her family with words that would ring in his ears from that day foward: "Don't die with any regrets, pursue your dreams". One can only imagine the inspiration this provided Tim. He determined that he was going to pursue music like never before. He also realized that if he wanted to be successful, he had to do it by himself. Tim ditched the idea of working with a band, and resolved to go it alone. It was going to be him and his acoustic guitar, which he had now taken out of the corner. He came to the conclusion that, as a songwriter, he would benefit most by embracing his influences, rather that trying to create something totally original. He recorded his first CD in his bedroom in 2003 with just an 8 track digital recorder. He also started training with some of the best performers and songwriters at The Swannanoa Gathering Workshop. Tim's willingness to observe, to listen to, and learn from professionals such as Tom Paxton, Steve Seskin, Tom Kimmel, James Keelaghan, Craig Carothers, Johnsmith, Pat Donahue, David Lamotte, Kate Campbell and others would eventually refine his skills as both a songwriter and a musicians.
Today, Tim is excited about the future of his music,He has just released his his second CD, entitled 'Starlite Drive-in', which very well place him in the company of singer/songwriters such as Jim Croce, Steve Goodman and John Prine. He hopes to have one of his songs recorded by a successfull recording artist.James Keelaghan has desribed Tim as an "Excellent songwriter, exquisite guitar player and the sweetest voice he has heard in a long time". These traits, coupled by the willingness to play nearly every coffeehouse, pub and festival in the United States, bode well for him, He strongly believes in the musician's mission of writing music that connects with listeners. He succeeds in giving a voice to those who have endured hard times but have survived by focusing on the good times. His songs perfectly blend the sweet and the sour, the humorous and the sad. Tim delivers a sincere and intriguing performance that has captured audiences from almost half the US. If that which is real and true inspires Tim Fast, perhaps this new working class hero ought to glance in the mirror. For more in formation, visit
