Pixie Michael has been astounded by the level of local talent performing at his Katoomba nightclub â TrisElies â over the past few years, particularly in the Hip-Hop/Funk/Ska/Dub genre. If anyone has and eye for talent he has, having spent many years on the road as a tour manager for acts the calibre of Mother Goose, Divinyls, Underworld, K.C. and The Sunshine Band, Renee Geyer, Richard Clapton and moreâ¦Pixie decided to help these emerging young local musicians to get their message out there and initially the idea was to record a cd which could be used to send to festival and venue bookers as a Blue Mountains showcase. Michael said, âthis project has had a lot of help via the willing sponsorship of Paul Handel at Technical Audio Group for mics and Allen & Heath desks, directed and edited by Morgan Lawless at UWS and from the bands themselvesâ¦to capture the moment is everything.â

The final outcome is a DVD/CD set recorded âliveâ and which stands alone as a genuine recording for music fans â The TrisElies Sessions Vol. 1. What you hear and see is what was played on the night by bands such as RumPunch , Moodswing, Funk Injection, Skankerchiefs & Jumbledat. No over dubs and no remixes. The venue also doubles as a recording studio, regularly recording and filming musicians from the local talent pool and is open as a recording studio to young bands, where they receive mentoring along the way. âthe payoff is already being seen through the success that these bands are achieving in a crowded market and Volume 2 is on its way,â said Pixie.

All of the bands featured are creating a lot of interest in the industry and building a following outside of the local scene with Funk Injection playing major venues including the Sydney Metro and the Enmore Theatre. Their cool originals hint at jazz with some reggae and funk thrown in. Hip-Hop/Reggae/Dub outfit RumPunch, regularly perform at prestigious Sydney venues including the Vanguard, Gaelic Club and Will & Tobyâs as well as the Peats Ridge and Surry Hills Festivals. Jumbledat are having similar success in building up a strong, wide following having played at numerous venues in Sydney and Canberra and selling out every show at their home ground â TrisElies. In addition, Moodswing built a solid Sunday night Jazz residency that attracted a wide demographic.

This is not a band, but a venue. Based in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, this is a venue with a plan: to provide the hottest acts and bands that have played at TrisElies through one of the best sound systems and acoustics in the world. If you don't believe it...check it out!
