Joy + Pain doesn't so much have a theme as much as I just tried to write from my soul. I wanted a rougher, more minimal sound than my first CD Remember Me. I wanted to do different things with my vocals, so they're a little grungier every now and then. "Bang the Drum" is a raucous romp about the thrill of invading other countries. "Break Free" is about feeling really frustrated. I just happened to write it during the 2004 Presidential Elections. "Joy" is about being thankful for all my blessings. The rhythm is based on the African-American drum & fife rhythms and then the song kind of turned into a jig. "You Are My Pain" was inspired by Joseph Campbell's writings on love, but it's really about my two sons. People usually laugh when I say that, but anyone who has kids should understand what I'm singing about. Well, I guess you could feel that way about a dog or a cat, too. "Sunrise" is a morning prayer. And last but certainly not least is Peter Gabriel's lovely "In Your Eyes". I've always loved that song and I'm so happy to be able to record it. Tell me what you think! Thanks, Jan
