As founder, songwriter and frontman of NYC's legendary "Choosy Mothers", Katz took NYC's live music scene by storm in the mid 90's.
Choosy Mothers played to packed houses at such renowned New York institutions as Wetlands, Tramps and New Music Cafe, sharing stages with such artists as Dave Matthew's Band, 3rd Eye Blind, Jeff Buckley, john Popper, Joan Ozborne, Spin Doctors and Ziggy Marley.
They also generated a large local following during their 3 set weekly performances at Mondo Cane.
The sheer mass of the Mothers' buzz allowed them to sell 15,000 recordings of James' original music without any label or marketing support!
It was this great exploration within the live band performance circuit that moved James Katz to grow into a seasoned musician, songwriter, and overall entertainer.
Before the disbanding of Choosy Mothers in 1997, James earned his BFA from the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program at the New School in New York City. The skills he gained there became the tools he used to begin the next phase of his musical career.
Through self-education and perseverance, James became a master at music production.
Composing, arranging, recording, mixing and mastering tracks for other artists in a vast array of musical genres including rock, pop, avante acoustic, Jazz, hip-hop and R&B has enabled James to further hone and expand his distinct signature sound.
His new release 'glow' is the culmination of his stylistic reinvention. Each flickering sonic ember is representative of the spirit and talented glow that exists within James Katz.
