Details:
This album, my third, is about how the way that one responds to lifeâs challenges can affect the outcome of those challenges.
Weâve all got those challenges, every day of our lives. Iâve had my own, the past few years â an extremely painful breakup, difficult days at work, even sitting in slow traffic and dealing with the maniacs whipping in and out between cars like a slalom course. And Iâve discovered that the best way to deal with the challenges is to remember that âGoing Coastalâ beats âgoing postal,â to take the occasional âMental Health Day,â to spend time around people who prefer seeing the âSunshine in the Rain,â to enjoy a little âRaspberry Rumâ with friends, and most important of all, to create the state of mind where âEvery Dayâs a Holiday.â
ABOUT THE SONGS:
Every Dayâs a Holiday
What does getting laid off mean to you? Is it a horrible problem, or a wonderful opportunity? The last time it happened to me, I chose to see it as the latter. Rather than sit at home and feel miserable and rejected and worry about where my next meal was coming from, I chose to see it as an âextended vacation,â during which I didnât have to define who I was by my job title, and during which I could do pretty much anything I wanted to. I was much happier that way. I wasnât âunemployed;â I had just found the place in my heart and mind in which every day is a holiday.
Going Coastal
Have you noticed how much higher peopleâs average stress level seems to have gotten in recent years? Folks often donât give one another the benefit of the doubt anymore. People turn arguments into gunfights, cut each other off in traffic, and âgo postalâ at the slightest provocation. Iâd rather think that when the going gets tough, the tough Go Coastal.
Clueless in Key Largo
What would you do, if the Special Person in your life just said âgoodbye,â with no apparent warning? Would you cry? Would you rage? Would you wake up hungover in a strange hotel on an island somewhere? What would you do then?
Yes, the boat used in the movie African Queen is docked in Key Largo harbor.
Mental Health Day
Who hasnât had days when the sun was shining and the beach beckoned, but you had to go to work? Who hasnât felt the temptation to just âcall in healthyâ instead? I think we need to do it more often. âMental health daysâ are my favorite kind of workday, and when you call in, tell your boss I said itâll make you a more valuable and productive employee in the long run.
Rainy Day in Paradise
What happens when you get to your long-awaited vacation placeâ¦alone? After planning it as a wonderful time with someone special? And to make matters worse, itâs *raining*! At a moment like this, do you stay miserable because someone has left and the sun has gone awayâ¦or do you notice the beauty around you, find the bits that are still wonderful, and make the best of it?
Cabana Boy
Sunny Jim White is one of my favorite Trop Rock artists, and this is one of my favorite Sunny Jim songs. Itâs a fan favorite in concert, particularly among my female fans. I wish Iâd heard it about a year before I first did. Ah well; we move forward. I want to shower someone with affection like this, totally playful, unself-conscious, and a little bit over the top. I think itâd be fun, at least for a little while.
Sunshine in the Rain
Sometimes, being around the person who is *always* cheerful can be a royal pain. Other times, when things look dark and itâs hard to believe in yourself, having someone around who will believe in you no matter what can change your life.
I Need a Weekend
I donât much like Monday mornings, especially after a particularly festive weekend. You donât know where the time went, but you *sure* donât want to go to work. You want another weekend, right then, so you can recover from that first weekend.
Raspberry Rum
Who doesnât like a mellow, happy day off somewhere with someone special? I fell madly in like with Cruzan Raspberry Rum one October afternoon while partying with a bunch of Las Vegas Parrotheads, and decided to memorialize it as part of a love song.
I Donât Care (if the Plane Donât Come)
Once in a while, you get to go on a vacation thatâs so good you donât want it to end. I mean, what do you have to go back to? Work? Traffic? The plane can wait â Iâm staying right here, where itâs warm and beautiful, thank you very much.
What It Is
Iâve obviously needed to do a bit of healing in recent years, because this theme of finding a good place on the Earth â in this case, someplace tropical â and letting it heal you is one of the themes that runs through several songs on this album. Sometimes the best you can do is to make the best of where you are and what's going on around you.
Southern Cross
The old classic. It's popular because people relate to it. *I* relate to it. I like to think that I've brought my own particular spirit to the song, enough to make it worth adding to your own collection.
