Details:
Scott Malyszka has been described as a songwriter with a "classic folk" sound and a "twisted view of the world." With many years of songwriting and performing behind him, Scott brings strong energy and a curious mind into the studio to record this debut album.
âI donât Have Friends Anymoreâ was intentionally recorded as a simple album. Though he plays many instruments and knows many other musicians, Scottdecided that the debut album of his original songs should be showcased in a spare and simple style. He wanted to capture these songs, as he likes to say, the way they sound when performed live. Most of the tracks were recorded live, though Scott did record a few songs with overdubs. At Cabin Studios in Leesburg, VA, the excellent engineering of Les Thompson (founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) was a great fit for Scottâs tenor voice and flatpicking guitar style.
This album follows Scott through more than fifteen years of songwriting, from his days as an introspective theology student through his entry into the corporate world. Scott uses his own experiences to tackle topics such as shyness (âIs Pity Still A Sin?â), corporate craziness (âCorporation Bluesâ), and spiritual searching (âCold and Empty Nightâ, âGraven Imageâ). Other songs muse on diverse subjects such as romance, alcoholism, and the Kinsey scale. Written from the first- and second-person perspective, these songs will speak to you with direct emotions.
The title track is a good example of Scottâs songwriting approach. One day, Scott was practicing a sad old bluegrass standard, and his wife commented that the music had a melancholy effect on her. That remark inspired him to write the saddest song he could think of to capture the isolation and loneliness of suburban life today. Like the other songs on this album, âI Donât Have Friends Anymoreâ evokes emotions through a collage of word pictures.
