BIOGRAPHY Ski Johnson, a Washington, DC based saxophonist, has developed a captivating soulful jazz style that undisputedly makes him a musical force in the New Millennium. Artistically, his creative, distinctive and versatile sound is comparable to renowned soul and jazz artists such as Grover Washington, Jr., Gerald Albright, Najee, George Howard and Kenny G. Donald âSkiâ Johnson began his musical journey with his introduction to the clarinet while in junior high school. Ski soon discovered the saxophone and fell in love with power of expression and creativity that he experienced through this new instrument. Attending the renowned Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington DC, where he played in the Duke Ellington Jazz Band and gained an appreciation for the educational element of the art of music. Ski went on to attend Virginia Commonwealth University and later Howard University where he continued his formal musical education while playing on the DC Jazz circuit. In 1988, Ski , along with life long friends Larry Toye and Malcolm Alexander, created Wide Awake Records and released his debut CD, âSki Johnson and Friends: On the Riseâ, followed by the 1990 releases of âFollowing A Rainbowâ and âSki Johnson Liveâ. Ski Johnson had become a Jazz icon on the local DC scene and started to question how to move to the next level. In 1992, Wide A Wake, signed a major distribution deal with Red Eye Distribution and released Skiâs fourth CD, âIn Your Eyesâ, which prompted a national tour with R&B artist Brian McKnight. During the remainder of the 90âs, Ski put the studio on hold as he toured worldwide with Lionel Hampton, Nancy Wilson, Phyllis Hyman, the Harper Brothers, Billy Taylor, Lo-Key, Freddie Jackson, Mikki Howard and Patti LaBelle. In 2000, Ski resumed the studio work and released âSkiâs Supremeâ, considered by most his greatest work to date, which he defined as âUrban Jazzâ. Ski does a fresh contemporary rendition of Chaka Khanâs âTell Me Something Goodâ; a romantic ballad âSkiâs Supremeâ collaborated with Grammy nominees Roy Ayers, Alyson Williams and Tony Terry. The CD created quite a media buzz on the local DC scene which moved national with appearances on Good Morning America and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In same year Ski released his first DVD production, âSailingâ, with Tony Terry filmed on location in Bermuda. In 2004, Ski released âWelcome To My Worldâ, featuring Tony Terry and a host of talented singers and musicians. The CD crosses many genres of music, R&B, Jazz, Hip Hop and Soul. âItâs a different CDâ, sayâs the New York and Los Angeles Times. Ski states, âWelcome To My Worldâ was my personal expression of all the things that have happened to me. It was a very confusing time full of heart break and tragedy, the music as well as the artwork express my inner self at that difficult timeâ. The CD Artwork made such an impression on Revolution Studios/Sony that it was featured in the 2005 âXXX: State of the Unionâ movie starring Samuel Jackson and Ice Cube. Skiâs next project, scheduled for release in September 2008 through Wide A Wake Records, is titled âSki Time: New Beginningsâ. Skiâs promise to deliver the next evolution of his urban jazz style is evident in the title cut âSki Timeâ in which Ski plays over funky hip hop grooves. âIâll Be Waiting For Youâ, combines soul, hip hop and jazz in a mid tempo contemporary groove. Indeed Ski has come a long way since his early days of Duke Ellington School of Arts, get ready because there is a new Ski right around the corner!
