Born in Salem, Oregon, Camille Schmidt, the daughter of two singing choral director parents, was raised in Omaha, Nebraska. Camille wrote her first song at age 5, an alternate melody to Away in a Manger, transcribed by her dad. Stan knew he had a challenge on his hands when his 10-year- old daughter pointed out Mel Torme at the Denver airport.
As a teenager, Camille continued to play piano and sing, write songs and perform in choirs and musicals. She couldnât seem to get enough of groups like Earth, Wind and Fire and the Spinners but was equally fascinated by the complexities of vocal groups like The Singers Unlimited and spent hours listening to and imitating great jazz vocalists.
Camille spent her first year of college studying traditional vocal music at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. While at UNL she was a member of the University Singers, the Scarlet and Cream Singers, worked in one of her first bands as a âchick singerâ and sang jingles on the side. Through the recording studios Camille heard about Berklee College of Music and was soon off to Boston to continue her studies.
Camille was lead vocalist in Berkleeâs Jazz Choir. Under the direction of Steve Prosser, this a cappella group performed for important events including Ted Kennedyâs 50th birthday party and a PBS appearance with Tony Bennett. Camille also sang on many sessions in and around Boston and worked as a keyboardist/vocalist with popular area bands. After graduating from Berklee, Camille stayed on as an instructor, serving as vocal coach for major concert productions and teaching stage performance, recording studio techniques, and ear training.
Camille moved to Nashville in 1989. Word of her diverse stylistic range and solid professionalism quickly spread among local contractors. She kept a steady calendar of recording sessions and live dates.
After seven years in Music City Camille returned to Omaha to take a break from music. It wasnât long before Camille was a sought-after accompanist and vocal coach. She began rebuilding her jazz chops by playing solo Piano/Vocal gigs in clubs and restaurants. Her sillier side led her to some voiceover work and she landed the voice of âVeronicaâ on the cartoon series, âArchieâs Weird Mysteriesâ and âSpringâ on âStrawberry Shortcake.â
The release of her first CD, âEasy to Loveâ on the Clarion label in 2006 was a huge step forward. It features Camille with a fantastic Jazz quartet on ten vintage tunes along with an inspiring cover of Brenda Russellâs, âThe Last Dayâ. Her radiant voice and passionate delivery glows on tunes like, âMistyâ, âWhen Sunny Gets Blueâ and a hip, Latin version of âSummertimeâ.
Since the CDs release, Camille has studied with vocalist Jennifer Barnes at The Jamie Aebersold Summer Jazz camps and with Jennifer, Rosanna Eckert, and Paris Rutherford at the Vocal Jazz workshop at North Texas State. She performed with Hal France in the Blue Barn Music Festival and is frequently featured artist with Omaha Performing Arts. Camille has taken her talents to Sioux Falls and Kansas City, and in 2007 was a featured vocalist at LSUâs Hot Summer Nights Jazz festival in Baton Rouge. She is a popular judge and clinician for Jazz workshops and competitions including the NCDA vocal Jazz Festival in Columbus, NE.
Aside from a full performance schedule, Camille teaches private lessons and arranges music, leads the band, plays and sings for a Jazz Church Service. Her work with this combined black/white congregation led to many of the arrangements on the current CD "Dream in Color" which features refreshing arrangements of Gospel Standards, Spirituals, and Traditional Hymns.
Camille is attached to her Ipod these days and continues to be inspired by many genres of music especially songs with great melodies. The singing and arranging freedom in Jazz fuels her search new creative avenues. Sheâll soon head to New York City to pursue her Masters in Jazz Voice at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.
With her highly appealing voice, versatility and enthusiasm, the future looks very bright for Camille DeVore; a must see for anyone who desires music delivered with depth, soul, and originality.
