Rare For 2008
Itâs been nearly eight years since I started this quest to put music together into collections. I spent the previous twenty seven with my four track sound on sound cassette recorder coming up with ideas and putting together demos to send out to publishers and more publishers thinking that maybe one of my songs would fit perfectly with some artist they could convince to use my music. It was gratifying simply to have them send it back with a not at this time message. Some were extremely helpful and would add some bit of advice or say they were looking for another genre. It was a tough go.
Then, eight years ago I decided to put up my own web site and add a store front so I could sell music over the internet. Four years later I had four pages of web site, some music samples, some pictures and a store that charged 28 dollars a month with no sales yet, except the ones I did on my own. Cainât remember how I ran into the CDBaby site but all of a sudden it dawned on me that this was exactly what I was looking for. Eight years ago I also bought a Roland VS 880 digital eight track recorder and a Roland A 90 EX keyboard. Now I am cookin and things sound way better. This last summer I bought a Roland VS 2400 CD unit and now have 24 recording tracks with room to make 24 virtual tracks or takes for each of the 24 tracks. This also gave me more processing power as I could run through the 880 and use some effects and reserve the processors in the2400 for later use.
The picture on the cover of Rare For is fitting as weâve been very busy remodeling the kitchen and taking care of grand kids and having an unusual amount of company this year. Itâs great but it did cut into beach time for pure relaxation a little, let alone keeping up with production. We have, as you can see and hear this latest project done. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed putting it together to share.
Rare For rocks a little more than any of the previous CDs but itâs not necessarily rock and roll, the guitars bite a little more and Iâve attempted to pay special attention to the feeling in each piece.
Promised Story
I had told you all earlier that weâd tell you more about Blue Steel and the touring days earlier on. So here goes.
I believe I was fifteen when a friend suggested going out to Valentine Nebraska and getting summer jobs haying. We did just that. We showed up at the ranch were shown our quarters and told we be starting when the sun came up. We did and we had a great breakfast and then were instructed on how to gas up and grease the tractors. I donât remember his name but he and me got to be the stackers. The friend I went out there with was a little more experienced with tractors and such and got to mow. Now I donât know how many of you are familiar with the sled stackers of yore but the mowers cut it down the rakes put it in rows and the sweeps put the smaller stacks on the sled to be thrown onto the stack. One stacker drove the tractor that provided the power to hoist the loads up the sled and onto the stack. The other stacker would then jump into the stack and pack it down so that when the sleds frame was moved away to the next stack it wouldnât fall down. I suppose you wonder what this has to do with Blue Steel.
Well at the time I wasnât into music all that much. I thought the beatles were a joke. Come on, I Want To Hold Your Hand was so lame. My favorite song of the time was Theyâre Coming to Take Me Away Ha Ha. Well after a month of busten our bunns we actually got paid 350 dollars. When we got back to Norfolk we went shopping. I started my collection of albums. Try these out for size Grand Funk Grand Funk Railroad and Closer To Home, Crow by Crow, Crosby Stills Nash and Young Déjà vu, Neil Young After the Gold Rush and Jethro Tull Benefit. Now I was hooked on some real music. These are still included in my all time greatest albums list.
Later I decided that the saxophone wasnât anything like playing the guitar so I bought an Alvarez 6022 acoustic and was on my way. Learned a few chords and bought a couple top forty books of songs that I knew and picked a few that had only a few chords. Then started putting them to my own rhythms and played at whatever speed I could. Two years later I heard of the band Blue Steel and went to jam with them. By then I had this black Ovation electric guitar and a Fender Super Reverb. We jammed regularly and practiced the songs they had worked out. I kept trying to convince them that we could also write music and mix it in. After a time a couple of the members warmed up to the idea and so we then were covering a few and doing some of our own.
We had a few bookings mostly local taverns and occasionally schools. Battle Creek was one about twenty miles from Stanton and fortunately we had a couple friends that liked to come along and hang out and listen. We called them our roadies but it didnât pay much. This was the bands third appearance there and my first with them at BC. We loaded everything up and went on over and set up. Naturally we waited till the last minute possible so weâd wouldnât have much time to tune up or sound check. Oops, no microphones. One of our buddies jumped in his car and raced to and from Stanton while we did an instrumental set. Everything ended up going off with out hitch, the mikes made it and the beat went on.
