"Oh, no!" we thought, "Trance music. That's gonna suck." However, we were pleasantly surprised to find that Trance Castle, was not as boring or monotonous as expected. In fact, we were even entertained and found Jiva Train's approach refreshing. The sparse vocals, are not a bad thing...There is some excellent guitar-work throughout and some creative extras on "Cosmic Things." The cool piano work shines on "Latin Love." Trance Castle took us on a pleasant journey instead of the expected endlessly boring trip in a psychedelic-painted-school-bus driving to nowhere. Buy this CD for a change of pace.

Jiva Train is the product of lead guitarist Satyen Thaker. There is no shortage of his instrument on Trance Castle....The 10-minute disc-closing "Clowns" isn't a bad approximation of Junta-era Anastasio's soaring pans over the Vermont countryside, and must be as fun to perform as it was to write...great ride.

"Jiva" is a Sanskrit word for soul. It also embodies the musical ideal of Jiva Train: music that comes from the soul, and tickles the soul. The compositional power of Jiva Train is definitely something that is rare in our current age of mainstream entertainment. Every song Jiva Train writes has a deep and profound meaning, bound to enamor and enlighten any listener, and maybe even inspire some budding musicians. Their sound is created from an interesting mixture of styles: Rock, Latin, Funk, and Classical. Jiva Train takes pride in the fact that they use a variety of song forms. While they do have plenty of catchy vocal songs, they just as often find themselves writing the kinds of instrumentals that bridge the enormous gap between Rock and Classical. These four musicians have come together for the pure love of making music. Jiva Train enjoys the spontaneity and freshness of improvisation, but songwriting/composing has and always will be the focus.
Satyen Thaker, the songwriter/composer and guitarist for Jiva Train, is a graduate of the University of Colorado Music School at Boulder, receiving a BA in Music. Jimmy Farrell (Bass), Derek Turner (Keyboards), and Kevin Reitz (Drums) all have performed in numerous bands prior to Jiva Train, and all have had extensive live experience.
