Details:
Sydney Smith, the leading pianist of the Salon period, was a composer of some 400 works, including transcriptions. Presented here are five selections. Three are among his most popular original compositions: Le Jet D'eau, Tarantelle Brillante and Lily of the Valley. Also included are two of his most celebrated transcriptions, Braga's La Serenata and his Brillant Fantasia on Maritana(an opera by the Irish composer William Wallace).

Smith was born in Dorchester, England in 1839 and died in London in 1889. He studied piano in Leipzig with Moscheles and composition under Reitz. He returned to England in 1858, and in the following year settled in London where he had a considerable reputation as a teacher. His compositions, exclusively for the piano, were as popular on the continent as in England.

J.J.Sheridan is one of Ireland's greatest pianists and composers. A graduate of the Royal Irish Academy of Music, he studied piano there with John O'Sullivan and Valerie Walker, and composition with A.J. Potter. His compositions include Saint Canice's Mass (1969), as well as numerous original piano compositions and piano arrangements. His many awards include the Esposito Medal at Dublin's Feis Ceoil in 1971. His concert appearances include starring in Irish Eyes Are Smiling at the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney from 1979 to 1982. Now a resident of the United States. J.J. enjoys an International career as a recitalist and soloist.
