Spinning the Sky, the debut album from Mary Hocks, features powerful melodies and intimate singing. The album includes 11 original tunes and for Nanci Griffith fans, a cover of "More Than a Whisper" with bossa nova rhythms. Hocks' gorgeous voice moves easily from folk music to smooth jazz and soulful blues. Recorded and produced at Chris Rosser's Hollow Reed Studio in Asheville, NC.
"Spinning the Sky has a seamless, soulful groove that I find very intoxicating. Jazzy at times, folkie at others, even when dipping into Indian or Island flavors, it remains consistent to an overall laid back vibe. Mary's songs tumble forth with poetic grace revealing insights that invite the listener to read along as she sings. She is a marvelous singer and songwriter."
Mike Miller, music writer, author of Hootie!: how the Blowfish put the Pop Back in Pop Rock (1997) and contributing author to Making Notes: Music of the Carolinas (2008).
