Have you ever been hooked on the narrative of a conversation that you weren't supposed to hear? That is one of the things you might feel when listening to the music of singer/songwriter Joe Purdy. As he remembers an angry moment or a stolen kiss, his voice becomes startlingly intimate -- you can practically feel his breath on your ear. Purdy's bluegrass roots show through on "StompinGrounds," the third independent release from the golden-voiced Arkansas native. Mandolin and banjo solos accent the likes of "Woman Go" and "Trouble," and good old-fashioned storytelling reigns throughout. But Purdy throws a few curveballs -- well-placed synthesizers on songs like "Rainy Day Lament" keep the sound fresh and closer to David Gray than Doc Watson.
