Details:
If you ask her when she started singing Katie will tell you that she cannot remember when music wasn't just there. Even before she became an up-and-coming singer-songwriter with a velveteen voice, Katie's brother Andy, a fellow musician, exposed Katie early on to a variety of musical influences. As a result, she grew up playing, singing, writing, and performing. "There is something so alive about music. Andy was full of life. It became a reality to me that this could be a profession."

Katie has come a long way since those early days. Her style is defined, and she possesses her own voice-both as a singer and as a songwriter.

Katie's sound is beautiful, unique, accessible, and welcoming. Her singing voice reminds listeners of both Jewel and Shawn Colvin, and her songwriting features sensitive pop melodies, brilliant hooks, and rich emotion. Katie's singing and songwriting are reflections of her diverse influences, which incorporate the soul of Aretha Franklin, the energy and intensity of Led Zeppelin, the rich harmonies and song crafting of The Beach Boys, and the roots-rock of Bruce Springsteen.

Katie remarks, "My favorite thing about music is how it ties people together. At a party or a family gathering my brother and I will just take out the guitar and start to play. When we're done I feel like the room is more intimate. They have watched me loose control of my own movements and sounds. I have shown them my soul and that in turn, makes they respond the same. The conversations change after the music finishes. People that don't even know they love to sing watch how we love it and they sing along. Music is an addiction. So playing live is as good in front of your family as anyone. It is this strange rush to throw your passion on the table and then watch as people flock to it and want to join. No matter what language you speak, you speak music. I can take more of a chance on one note in a song that I can in my own life over the course of a year. Singing has taught me that you need to take chances or you can't grow."

To sit down with Katie Jay is to sit down with a twenty-two year old kid, whose spirit rivals all that we idealize about youth. You'll leave having met a woman who feels compassion and responsibility towards all that surrounds her. Katie's lyrics are familiar to the human heart.

Today, she is busy writing and recording with Producer Ben Yonas and guitarist Gawain Matthews. The full-length album was released on November 20, 2003. Musicians on the record include Smashmouth's Michael Urbano on drums, Zero 7 bassist Rob Mularchy, and Mint Condition lead singer Stokley Williams. Katie will tell you that her goals are "to do this always" -She means, to sing. And it is a sight to see. She can be found performing in the San Francisco Bay Area's most well known clubs, including Mill Valley's legendary Sweetwater.
