Description:

(ID 3954807)
Dark, creepy, pop rock: sounds of hollow distorted bass ,dark-pulse synth and tightly wound guitar. Lujan's vocals are urgent and pleading, juxtaposed nicely with fellow singer Singer's airy chants of reassurance.

Details:
Red Leaves 2008 Full Length, "By Road or Rail", is a fierce collection of dark pop sensations, combining emotion, precision, and style without ever compromising sincerity. The powerful and unconventional vocal interplay of female bassist Singer Mayberry and guitarist David Lujan set the stage... Influenced by bands such as Television, TV on the Radio, Brian Eno, Blonde Redhead, The Cure, Richard Hell, Nick Cave, Siouxsie and the Banshees...

Red Leaves was formed in Austin Texas by David Lujan (Guitars/Vocals) and Singer Mayberry (Bass,Keys/Vocals) in 2004.

Since 2006 they have done 3 tours of the West Coast, playing over 60 shows nationwide, including the Santa Fe Music Fest 2007 (with headliners Wu-Tang Clan, War, Everclear), Chinati Festival 2007 (Sonic Youth headlining), North vs. South Fest 2007, and SXSW 2007.

The band has also successfully self-released 2 Six Song EPs, "All the Zombies" in 2006, and "Disposable Parts" in 2007 (both available through PayPal at www.myspace.com/redleaves).

All three of the self-released recordings have received positive local reviews. Grammy Nominated Frenchi Smith (Sixteen Deluxe, Young Heartattack) served as producer on their 2nd EP and the 2008 LP at The Bubble Studios in Austin. The CDs have been sold at gigs nationwide, Austin Record Stores, CDBaby.com, and through direct mail order.

This Winter of 2008 Red Leaves will be recording new tracks for a 7inch to be self-released in February of 2009.

Their first EP, All The Zombies, garnered much praise for itâs dark, low-fi Cure-eqsue sound that came across as overwhelmingly fresh. Now, theyâve returned with another EP and have taken their obvious love for the Cure and manipulated into their own style. The band still feels fresh, but a bit more grown up and aware of where theyâre going.

This is especially evident in standout tracks like âKill You Sisterâ and âThe Clockmaker,â which feature David Lujan and his Robert Smith-enthused vocals over a bed of complex rhythms that are driven by Rich Caliâs work on the drums. Singer Mayberry also makes her presence strongly felt with groove-inducing bass lines and by serving as a perfect vocal companion to Lujan. âLove War Robots,â another notable number, showcases the trioâs pop sensibilities with excellent songwriting that exclaims lines like, âShe canât seem to get it out/ Words collide inside her mouth/ And donât make sense.â The band truly has a dynamic sound, which is also prevalent in the other three songs on the EP: âBicycle Escape Plan,â âMarket Placeâ and âDungeon Dance.â

If Disposable Parts has a downside in any way itâs definitely the fact that there is only about 20 minutes of music. The masses are going to need much more than that to hold them over until the arrival of the debut full length.
- John Laird
Austin Sound, September 2007

"When we last left Red Leaves, the local trio was dodging zombies. Here, on their second EP, they're building something bigger... "Bicycle Escape Plan" goes double Dutch on the jump-rope basslines of Singer Mayberry...Lujan's howl floats into Robert Smith territory, perhaps a nod to darker influences given the other tracks cut from an eyeliner-stained cloth: the dreamy "Love War Robots" and organ-driven "Dungeon Dance," which revisits last year's All the Zombies. Both songs build a solid case for the trio's synth-pop canon."
