Details:
Monokino is an electronic indie pop/rock band. The project that is âMonokinoâ, brings together the artistic visions of 3 musicians from 3very different worlds: George van Wetering (Amsterdam) song writer, lead vocals, guitar, Yu Jin (former keyboard player with the first all-women rock band âCobraâ from Beijing, China, and now living in Hamburg, Germany) on keyboard and synthesizer. In 2007 electronic drummer Frans van Gastel joined the band. The sound has been spiced up in a rather kitschy way with a combination of melodious high pitched vocals, static keyboard, rock guitar and electronic/acoustic drum segments.

In May 2006 Monokino released their first EP in China on the independent Chinese label, Newbees Records. Monokino played several gigs in Beijing and Shanghai to promote their EP. On May 4th, Monokino played at the 4-day Midi Music Festival in Beijing, China to 20,000 fans. Monokino was one of the first Dutch bands to play in China. Their China tour received mass press coverage back in The Netherlands. Between 2006 and 2008 Monokino played at all the main festivals and clubs in Holland and undertook two German tours.

Monokinoâs debut album will be released on Chinaâs largest independent label Modern Sky in September 2008. Monokino will be performing at various clubs throughout China in September, October and November 2008. Highlights will undoubtedly be the upcoming Midi Music Festival and the Modern Sky Festival, both to be held in October. Monokino will subsequently return to China at the beginning of November for a major German festival to be held in Guangzhou.

Monokino was formed in Hamburg in 2003. George originally got to know keyboard player Yu Jin when he was studying at the art school in Hamburg as part of his exchange year of his Master study at the University of Amsterdam). Since the commencement of the band, Monokino has built a tight fan base in Germany and Benelux countries and has received critical acclaim for both its recorded indie music and the bandâs live performances. Monokino has won several awards in different categories. Monokino was selected as band with the best demo by Studio Brussels in Belgium and was chosen as best new-comer act by the daily Dutch newspaper, Parool. Monokino also reached the semi finals in the John Lennon Talent award in Germany.

Reviews:

"Monokino is hip enough to grow into a big band. "

"Has certainly got the potential to attract mass appeal outside their home countryâ

"Very original trio â which is how it should be. Vocals and instruments are in perfect balance and as solid as a house. This is a fun band. "

"Alternative electro-indie from Amsterdam. Very diverse and very, very good. The band has a bit of everything. "

"Very original. They know the perfect balance to affect all parts of the body from the head to the abdomen, to the feet on the floor. "

"Finally a band that is uninhibited and dares to be adventurous."

"Good mix of then and now. Good recalcitrant contemporary. "
"Every one of their songs is a gem."

"Good thoughtful and sophisticated arrangements. Beautiful filtered screaming ! "

"The playing and the programming are both good. Everything is well balanced. "

"Very melodic and varied."

"Catchy tunes"

"Catchy and compelling"

"Fragile, vulnerable vocals. Nice contrast to the somewhat cooler beats and keyboard sounds. "

âThis trio puts down a very unique and idiosyncratic sound, primarily due to the voice of George van Wetering. We hear various influences, OMD, Placebo and even snatches of Joy Division.â

âTours in China and big in Amsterdam. On the podium appear super digital devices, behind which a small Chinese girl occupies the space. The singer looks like a college-boy with a hip hairstyle. The first song of the set is explosive. A good basic rock 'n' roll riff is supported by freaky noises from the digital samples. The drummer plays on an original looking device, consisting of regular-toms and electronic drum pads. Monokino at the end of their set leave a very good impression. The volume is increasing and the hyperactive drummer is driving the whole delicious sound in the style of Joy Division. The group ends with a nice quiet number, after which the vocalist and keyboard player blow out a solitary candle."
