THE DANGERS release their first CD with a mix of old and new material. THE SUN TELEGRAM:
Pappy and Harriet's to host music festival
By Mark Petix, Staff Writer
They call it a campout, but David Lowery sees it as more of a homecoming.
Lowery, the founder of Camper Van Beethoven and co-founder of Cracker, says Pioneertown in the San Bernardino County desert is a special place.
The perfect place, in fact, for the fourth annual Campout Music Festival, three days of music and merriment that begin Sept. 11 at the popular honky-tonk, Pappy & Harriet's Palace.
The idea of the campout began as a way to celebrate the birthdays of some of the band members and crew....
"It's cool," Lowery said. "It's hard to explain to people who haven't visited it. I go there every chance I get."Maybe it's the mystique of nearby Joshua Tree and the legend of Gram Parsons, the rocker who died there. Or maybe it's the magic of live music, cold beer and thick steaks served up in the middle of nowhere. But the campout seems to grow every year - no mean feat for Camper Van Beethoven, which was formed 25 years ago, and Cracker, now nearing its 16th year. Lowery says people still think of Cracker as the new band, although its biggest three hits were MTV favorites in the early '90s...
Lowery, who has been living recently in the Chicago area, says it's always great to return to the Inland Empire. Cracker co-founder Johnny Hickman was raised in Riverside and San Bernardino, and other band and crew members have local connections as well.
"We're all local boys," Lowery said.
He says Camper and Cracker's alt/indie sounds were forged in the Inland Empire, where the sounds of ranchero, country and metal could be heard loud and strong.
He has vivid memories of The Dangers, a local band that dared to bring the area its first real dose of punk.He says the band, fronted by Chris LeRoy, never got its full due, so he's very happy The Dangers are part of this year's campout lineup.
"There was nothing like it on the local music scene," he said. "They really inspired us."
