About the artist:
Goran Rista is Serbian-born artist who picked drums as his instrument of choice for self-expression. He has traveled the world over, backing up various acts in many musical genres. All of these experiences have influenced his creative being, which is evident in his work.
He has performed with many people including: Ole Ole (Rumba/Flamenco), Carli Munoz, Eddie Gomez, Neil Finn (Crowded House), Estefano, Lanzallamas Monofonica, as well as various groups with his brother Boyan.
âI love many genres of music and I very much enjoy both listening and playing them.â
Goranâs drumming style can be described as as combination of clean execution, power, wide dynamic range, instantaneous interplay with music and touch.
About the album:
"For many years I have been wanting to put together my own album. Many times I've been frustrated with having to play in this or that way and not have much artistic control over what is going on around me musically. I grew increasingly hungry to create music the way I feel it. This would enable expression in a way true to myself. I've been influenced by various music over the years and it was about time I put it all together into something that is uniquely mine. I went for whatever came to my mind and sounded right in my head."
"I have purposely refrained from hyper-compressing this CD (as it is the case with major labels' squashed releases). This album has optimal balance of dynamics, volume and transients, resulting in a natural-sounding, punchy, clean music that breathes with life. Want more volume? - Turn it up and feel the power:) "

You may have heard the saying "you are what you eat". It is one of these phrases that has been around for years, and is always somewhat evocative of an older woman lecturing recalcitrant offspring about the benefits of some alleged foodstuff or other. Whether or not is it true in terms of culinary expeditions into the unknown, it certain seems true in music. Each artist is, in their own inimitable way, the product of every record they have heard, and every musical encounter they have ever experienced. Consciously and unconsciously, all these experiences play a part in the music we choose to create, and that which we choose to record.
Gorans recent release is no different. From the diversity of tracks and the changes and nuances within these, it is clear that he has traveled and worked with a wide variety of characters in recent years. Looking at the track listings and credits, I pick up some old friends (and familiar faces) along with some more recent additions to what must be his global "frequent call list".
The frenetic polyrhythmic approach that I always think of as defining Gorans early practice routine is immediately obvious in Horizont. This is later offset by slower movements across the instrumentation. Turning to Have We Met Before I get the feeling that Herbie Hancocks electric period may have provided some food for thought in the lower register work and introduction. Similarly, the screaming ghost of Dave Weckl makes a brief appearance in Spanija, again causing me to smile before being called to account by the guitar of Gorans brother, Boyan. 6th Sense puts me in the mind of an Arabian Gateway trio in some respects, before the last number Dont Lose. This reminds me of some of the work of a freewheeling Jaco Pastorius, yet with perhaps a little more restraint.
All in all it is a pleasure to catch up with an old friend and see exactly what he is up to these days. It seems he has as much appetite for playing and listening as he ever had, and I look forward to his next work with interest…
