EncoprEsis burst onto the indie scene of NYC and Maryland in the late 1990s as the conception of NYC-based filmmaker/blogger/beatboxer Michael Tully.Working solely with his Tascam 4-track, acoustic guitar, casio keyboard and recorder, he weaved Brian Wilson-esque harmonies around tales of small-town adolescent misery with a zany imagination and unusual turn of phrase more in keeping with his contemporaries of the 'Elephant 6' collective, many of whom were personal friends, to create the magical hungover-anthem that was 'The Grape Jelly Aesthetic'. Songs such as 'Bosoms Pass you By', 'Mothers who deserve it' and the all-time classic 'Broke out of Jail' should have been sure-fire Indie hits, but despite appropriate discontent and concern about his mental health of behalf of his mom, and the gushing praise of friends, record company interest was limited.

Through the early 00s, film-making took over for Tully and following work on David Gordon Green's first 2 films, he directed his first feature, 'Cocaine Angel' which was released in 2006 to critical acclaim at the Rotterdam Film Festival among other places. Following this, he went on to shoot and direct the documentary 'Silver Jew' about one of his musical heroes, David Berman, in Israel in 2006, the DVD of which is due to be released .. City later this year.

Music took a back seat, though Tully did continue to make off-beat bedroom classics in his spare time. Lo and behold, Tully's one-time protege and younger cousin John Tully (aka) JT Songs and his friend Patrick Hallinan, co-founder of Laredo Records, swooped in to sign EncoprEsis to their fledging label earlier this year.
