Leah Rainy sings with a sincerity that is hard to find in these days of genre-specific music. Like one of her biggest influences, Eva Cassidy, Leah is not afraid to sing country, pop, even samba; in fact, two of the songs on her debut album, "Firefly", are in Portuguese, written by her husband, Dan Oates, featured on guitar. Leah
herself wrote the other nine songs. Her songs, like her voice, are utterly without pretense, mostly love songs and blues taken from life.
The album was recorded by Martha's Vineyard producer Jim Parr, who also plays bass and sings harmony vocal. Other Martha's Vineyard-based musicians who can be heard on the album include: guitarists David Heilbroner and Mike Benjamin, saxophone and flutist Steve Tully, percussionist Rick Bausman, drummer
Steve Carreiro and trumpeter Edson Rogers.Glenway Fripp, who hails from Cape Cod, plays spare and lyrical piano. The album features a Brazilian flavor on many of the tracks besides the ones in Portuguese.
Throughout the disc Leah's clear and lovely voice floats atop rhythmic arrangements that complement her beautifully. Leah and her husband entered Jim Parr's studio in February 2003 with only rough versions of their songs, and no specific ideas of how to develop them. Thanks to Jim Parr's expertise, some great musicians, and alot of inspiration, the album developed into a sophisticated, yet accessible, melodic gem that is sure to please any listener.
