The foundation of "Fender Bender Productions" is formed by the eight year old musical partnership of Les Vaughn and Ted Matzen. They are the nucleus of "The Fender Benders" band and are surrounded by many talented song writers, musicians, and recording artists. And when it is the case, it shows; because that kind of passion leads to soul-feeding, from-the-heart performances that are naturally more appealing to the audience. There's an energy that cannot be denied with it, and a level of quality that cannot be achieved without it.Enter...Les Vaughn & "The Fender Benders". They hail from the Columbia River Gorge area, in the beautiful state of Oregon and are known throughout the northwestern region of the United States. The band is led by veteran singer/songwriter Les Vaughn, whom Portlanders will remember from the popular "Back Porch Boogie Band" of the '80's. To say that "The Fender Benders" are a solid band worthy of attention is an understatement. Together a short two years in its current form, the group already has one trip to Nashville under its belt. They were invited to perform two original tunes at the Christian Country Music Association National Convention and Awards Show (CCMA) at the downtown Sheraton Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. Their musicianship is undeniable; they have some of the best lead guitar harmonies and rhythm guitar sounds you'll ever hear, along with free style and effortless harmonies. Les Vaughn's "Ambrotose Train" caught immediate attention of the CCMA, and went on to hit Number 38 on Music Review Magazine's Gospel Country charts after its release. "Ambrotose Train", one of Les' favorite compositions, has been given radio air time in France, The Netherlands and Australia and was distributed to over 1,000 radio stations in the United States. The song has a Christian theme, Ambrotose means "food for immortal men or food of the gods" and speaks of the presence of GOD's word in one's life.Les Vaughn began singing as a toddler in Vale, Oregon, when his musical mother (now in her 90's) taught him gosphel songs while milking the family's cows. He made his "public" singing debut at the age of two when he serenaded his mother and new baby brother, Al, at the local hospital. He says he knew he would make music a profession at the age of 15 when he sang with a local school band, "The Nameless Ones", and the stage was quickly surrounded by admirers. Les Vaughn's voice is phenomenal ... and whether he is singing or playing the guitar, and regardless of what type of song he is performing, his deep, resonant voice immediately captures your heart. Music has played a big part of his life ever since, with many band experiences in and around the Portland area. While serving in the U.S. Navy boot camp, Les, and three other enlisted men, won a very large talent contest, held on the Naval Base in San Diego, California. He was inspired by musical artists, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Marty Robins and others. Les will astound you when performing some of his favorite songs made famous by Johnny Cash and the forever loved, Elvis Presley. His song list includes hundreds of standards (which includes country, Christian, blues, love songs, as well as a wealth of Oldies and rock & roll hits) and a vast library of his own compositions.Vaughn and Matzen first teamed up as a duo in '95 and rapidly made a name for themselves up and down the Gorge area. Their musical compatibility was apparent from the first time they jammed together, says Matzen. "It only happens a couple of times in a musician's life," Matzen says, "that you find somebody who connects with you like that." The name "The Fender Benders" was cemented by the fact they both played Fender guitars and a comical mishap when Vaughn, showing off, spilled his Honda Shadow motorcycle in Matzen's front yard, leaving a dent that remains to this day.Things never fell into place with as much uncanny ease and success as they have with "The Fender Benders"..."The chemistry we have on stage is almost like magic," says Les. "I feel very fortunate to be making music with each and every one of these guys. And I believe the success we're having and the reason things are starting to happen for us, is no coincidence."Vaughn is quick to credit each individual member of "The Fender Benders"as the reason for its popularity. "Everybody here is a star," he says. The band is composed of "players," he adds, not just musicians. "Players step on stage and no matter what the setting, the crowd or the song list, deliver a strong musical performance."Ted Matzen also writes for the group, plays guitar, does vocals and brings a blues/reggae influence, coupled with bluegrass and country. Ted's first professional gigs were performing for fraternity parties at San Diego State College. He later performed with Joe Holly, the left-handed fiddler from the legendary group, "Bob Wells and the Texas Playboys". One of Matzen's bands,"The Ghostriders", was the house band for a popular San Diego, CA hot spot for several years. Ted also shared the spotlight with Les at the Nashville CCMA Convention & Awards show with his haunting "Where Winds Blow". Ted is proficient on lap steel guitar and mandolin as well as lead guitar. Ted houses the group's recording studio and works closely with Les Vaughn on recording plans and musical direction.Alan Hare's first professional music experience was playing in a Top 40 Hispanic band. He met Les Vaughn and Ted Matzen in 1999 at a local jam session where his guitar talents and vocal ability quickly earned him a spot in "The Fender Benders". His high harmonies and strong vocal leads are a large credit to the sound "The Fender Benders" have achieved. Alan added the newer country sound and the more driving top forty tunes to the group.
