(ID 424422)
Liquorice Sea's alt/pop streams between what's considered mainstream and indie, making them musical outlaws without the hardcore edge. Fans say we lean towards Jann Arden and then curve away on a Rickie Lee Jones detour.

Details:
Liquorice Sea's beginnings are rooted in songwriter Diane Barbarash's early solo career, performing acoustically in coffeehouses in Toronto, and composing in a hotel room above a nightclub. Two portable tape recorders were standard tools at that time, used to bounce and record harmonies onto song material, a "use what you've got" approach towards an eventual bigger picture. Some years later, Diane's lipstick red electric Stratocaster and a processor found their rightful place as her main accompaniment, and together in a Vancouver eastside studio, Diane continues to write and produce eclectic variations within her alt/pop writing style.

Liquorice Sea's harmonies are translated beautifully by Jennifer Graveness, and echoed in Wendy Atkinson's unique bass voicing. Jennifer brings R&B and jazz influences to the group's moody pop mix, and uses hand percussion in their live shows. Wendy first studied cello after being told by a music teacher that girls don't play bass. Eventually she picked up the electric bass on a dare, then took it one step further and cemented her own style. Diane, Jennifer, and Wendy's personal chemistry has kept them committed to the group for three years with no signs of slowing down in 2003.

Liquorice Sea's music falls in the valley of what is considered indie, making them musical outlaws but without the hardcore edge. Fans say they lean towards Sheryl Crow and then curve away on a Rickie Lee Jones detour.

BMC Management and Liquorice Sea are determined to share their songs with those who love music. The band is presently recording the followup to their debut 4-song EP. Liquorice Sea was featured as a finalist in umbrellamusic.com's "This is New Music", and was spotlighted on cdstreet.com. Liquorice Sea can also be found on CBC Canada's newmusiccanada.com and in publishing catalogues in Vancouver and New York for film and TV.
