While blues as a thriving art form disappears into our past and traditionalists try to confine blues to museums to preserve the music genre, others are reinventing it. It is even more unusual when an artist creates music using original material inspired not only from the tradition, but also pulling from the influences of the style. When a generation gap spanning 80 years is bridged by the musicians playing on the album producing a feeling of timelessness is something quite rare.
On the eve of Worldhaus Recordsâ 25 year anniversary arrives Waiting for Perfection, a ground-breaking, modern blues album featuring the partnership of premiere singer/songwriter Michael Hardie and guitarist Milton Hopkins melodically leading the way for the solid groove masters, bassist Chuck Rainey and Brazilian drummer/percussionist Eduardo Guedes. A 13-track collection of original, provocative songs, Waiting for Perfection also features long-time New York City veterans, harmonicaist Jon Paris and B3 Hammond/accordionist Brian Mitchell with Austin, Texas-based mandolin/violinist Warren Hood and pianist/daughter Myla Hardie backed by creative-driven vocalists Marlon Saunders, Biti Strauchn, and Arif St. Michael.
With Grammy award-winning Marc Urselli as producer/sound engineer inventing unique digital soundscapes channeling his experience from Les Paul and Sam Cooke teamed up with Michaelâs roots blues experience creates music that haunts and inspires the soul. Contrasting moments of melancholy represented on cajun âOutskirts of Townâ, a swampy New Orleans transplanted memory of Katrina and eerie âI Walk Aloneâ to hopeful âWhat If We Fell In Love Againâ and tell-it-like-it-is blues âWhatâs Wrong With Youâ. Milton and Michaelâs lead guitars are featured soaring in and out while the other one always rhythmically flows with the rock-steady groove.
The seed of Waiting for Perfection was planted when Michael met Houston Blues Legend Milton Hopkins in 1990 at The Reddy Room. Michael was able to persuade Milton to fly to Austin for a couple of days to record Houston Blues, Michael's first album of original blues songs which ended up being played on three continents. Seventeen years later Michael and Milton have teamed up for another album of original songs.
Milton Hopkins has had a career befitting a legend having played with Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, The Drifters, Gatemouth Brown, Bobby "Blue" Bland and many others. B.B. King asked Milton to be his rhythm guitar player and he accepted. He toured with the premiere blues band of its day for over 10 years.
Michael says, âMilton has always been known as the definitive rhythm guitarist. He is the backbone for dozens of great blues records for Stax, Atlantic and others, but he wasnât featured as a lead player and never got his name on the cover. Waiting for Perfection sets out to change that by showcasing his exquisite blues lead guitar playing and this time âMilton Hopkinsâ is on the front cover.â One listen and you will hear that Milton and Michael are not waiting for perfection any longer.
