Description:

(ID 425655)
These gentle ambient piano improvisations were recorded in one session, on December 11 2001. Light and Shadows refers to both the juxtaposition of sound and silence as well as moments of "shining" and "dimming."

Details:
Light and Shadows is a collection of short piano improvisations recorded on December 11, 2001 for my brother-in-law, Kevin Kummer. His appreciation for my early piano tinkerings as an adolescent, and the memory of him lying on the floor near the Baldwin Acrosonic (listening to me improvise sometimes at great length), inspired me to perform these pieces in a natural, freely expressive way. There was no rehearsal or re-touching, and my intention was simply to create moodscapes that were, to the greatest extent possible, an uninhibited flow from brain and spirit to music. As for the title of the collection, it is ambiguous enough so as not to unduly influence the listener with visual or programmatic associations (another reason why the individual works are not titled). The juxtaposition between sound and silence is light and shadows, and each piece can be said to have moments of "shining" and "dimming." I will stop here and let the listener conjure what they will, a projective process at the very least, unique to each of us.
