Quest (1998) and Waterline (2000) by Lórien.
Four stars.

These two albums showcase the developing talents of Lórien, a remarkable lady whose style blends influences from Celtic, folk, and filk music and the Society for Creative Anachronism. Her sweetly expressive voice and haunting, beautiful guitar playing combine to sweep you off your feet. She also has a deft touch with lyrics; much of the content is original, and the music follows along with subtle grace. Once you hear these, you'll be clamoring for more.

Quest introduces a couple of characters, Rorik and Karina, who take an even larger role in the next album. Meet them in "Desert Wind" and "Rorik & the Edge of the World." I'm also partial to the reverent "Lady of the Ocean" and the coursing hunger of "The Hunt" (lyrics based on a poem by J.C. Jederberg). The other songs on this one are "Bio of a Conqueror," "Confessions" (with traditional music), "StormDreams," "All Through the Night," "Family Song" (lyrics based on a poem by Ladona King), "The Farmer's Son" (with traditional music), "Pray for Rain," and "Bio of a Conqueror - Remix."

Alas, these are not available in stores. You can, however, order them from this Website: http://www.cdbaby.com

Waterline continues the story of Rorik and Karina, along with some other fascinating tracks. Rorik and Karina appear in the poignant "Wind's Four Quarters" (which is not a cover of the Mercedes Lackey song; this is original), "Gypsy Princess," "For Love & Beauty," "Ladies of the Rose," and "Waterline." While that first song is my favorite, I'm also partial to "Well of Swords" and "Bearer of the Crown." The others on the disk are "Fields of Lyonesse," "Winter's Gold," and "Grounded."

Quest and Waterline hold wide appeal for fans of fantasy in general, and for SCA folks as well. If you like folk or filk music, you'll love this. It's good driving music, though the lyrics demand enough attention that I wouldn't use it as background unless I'd listened to it enough to memorize everything. Highly recommended.
