Donning African robes, striped psychedelic shirts and sun glasses, here come the Funky Sex Gods. Their sound features Marc Black's guitar and voice. In the words of Relix reviewer, Phil Demetrion, "From the 70's down to present day, Marc Black's chant based songs and improvisational rave-ups have kept dancing souls movin' and groovin." One might say his live gigs presaged today's "jam band" scene."

The bottom of the band is represented with the sly thumpings of Michael Esposito, one of the founding members of The Blues Magoos, on bass and bicycle tire. Meanwhile, time is stretched and smacked relentlessly by the fearless science friction attitude of Eric Parker from Bob Weir's Kingfish, and the Stevie Winwood and Joe Cocker Bands.

On a given evening, the Sex Gods will recline into some laid-way-back funk, rage at the worldwide corporate playpen, slip into something more comfortable for a slithery seduction, before smacking everyone with an ecstatic dancethon.

Black is also a hipster storyteller, with tales that can be as mundane as the band setting up to play or as exotic as Jehovah asking an angel for a private dance only to find out she needs her personal accompanist, Beelzebub.

But this band isn't really about the individuals who appear. It's how they love to disappear. The way the machine fits together. The way the cloud settles over the players and the audience...and you can almost always spot some lightning.
