Bio:

(Written in the third person so as to sound more authentic, even though I wrote this myself.)

Matthew Shell was born in Washington DC in the 80s. At the age of three, Matthew would take wooden spoons and beat on pots, pans, and boxes. As a concert pianist from the Royal College of Music in London, Matthew's Mum realized that the boy needed some classical training in piano. Matthew's parents eventually caved in and bought him a beginners drum set, which Matthew loved, but his Mum continued to train him on piano in the classical tradition. Matthew was inspired by his Dad who he saw play trombone every Sunday in Church. As a trained musician who had played with a Navy band, his Dad taught him basic music theory, the importance of instruments playing together tightly, and the fundamentals of guitar, drums, and bass.

In elementary school, Matthew learned to expand his musical horizons, singing in the choir and playing the recorder and the hand bells.

By 3rd grade, basketball, soccer, baseball, climbing trees, and cycling took precedence over the piano. However, he continued to play the drums. It was not until high school that Matthew started playing piano again, and decided to improve on the guitar and the bass. Until 9th grade, the only music Matthew had listened to was classical and the soulful, rhythmic music at his multicultural church. His participation in High School choir gave Matthew enjoyment in singing choral works in several different languages. However, songs like Jars of Clay's "Worlds Apart" and DC Talk's "Mind's Eye," showed Matthew that music does not always have to be complicated to be good and that a simple song can convey purity, thoughtfulness, love, and truth, if presented with sincerity, originality, and passion.

Realizing that even a simple song can change the world, Matthew at the age of fourteen, picked up his Dad's guitar and composed his first two songs titled "Time" and "Alone." He continued to write and record, and in one year he wrote over 30 poetic guitar songs, all the while never repeating a chord progression. Matt soon learned the importance of improvisation. He recorded many songs and layered them with guitar improvisation. Soon, Matthew began to write songs that used only one instrument at a time, with the intention that the songs could stand on their own, whether the sole instrument was the guitar, piano, bass, or just drums.

While attending college, Matthew performed at many on campus open mic shows. With every performance, Matthew grew less nervous and improved his stage presence and performing ability. Matthew taught himself how to record on his computer using a $20 Plantronics headset with microphone and a $40 shareware program called Goldwave 4 (available on Goldwave.com).

In October 2002, Matthew independently released his first album titled "Rhythmic Journey" (© 2004 [because what you are hearing now is version four and required an updated copyright]). "Stompin," written in 1999, was Matthew's first all drum piece and the beginning of a new form of musical composition for him. Matthew became focused on writing compositions that incorporated lots of rhythm and the use of uncommon time signatures such as 7/8 (Vessel and the My Angel), 5/4 (Concatenation), 6/8 (Rhythmic Journey), and even 11/8 (Eleven).

Eight years from the day Matthew recorded his first two songs titled "Time" and "Alone," and one hundred compositions later, he strives to never repeat himself. Matthew's desire is to encourage anyone who has ever determined to change the status quo by creating new forms of musical composition.

Bizarre wonderful beats. They sound natural and electronic at the same time. Hard to describe, but very interesting.
