Manuel Gonzalez studied classical guitar and piano in the National School of Art in Havana, Cuba. After the 7th year he quit school without obtaining his degree. He was obsessed with the idea of running away from the communism. He tried several times to join musical groups going to around the world tour. In 1987 the oportunity he was hoping so much, came: an artist tour to Finland, Sweden and Denmark as a base player in the musical group Arte Vivo. In order to pay for the ticket to the northern countries, the group would entertain the crew in a cargo ship loaded with sugar. While crossing the Kiel canal in Germany, and without saying anything to anybody, afraid of being discovered, Manuel put a change of clothes in a plastic bag with the idea of jumping into the water during the night. If he made it to the shore, he would have dry clothes to avoid getting frozen. Another danger was to be seen by the officers of the cuban ship and get shot. He would have to swim as fast as he could to get away from the propellers. At last Manuel could reach freedom, lived for three year in Germany with political asylum status and today he lives in the United States with three kids and his wife.
Through the years his repertoir has been totally changed by people's request. That's how it has come to the classical guitar the music of the Gypsy Kings, Carlos Santana, Ottmar Liebert, Carlos Antonio Jobim, James Taylor, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, The Beatles and caribbean rithms such as Calypso, salsa, merengue, rumba, etc.
In a 20 years period Manuel has played in Cuba, Finland, Germany, Puerto Rico. He has worked for various cruise lines, i.e. Discovery, Carnival, Costa Cruise Lines, Fontainbleau Hilton, Di Lido Hotel, Seville, Fairmont, Traymor Hotel, in the Miami Beach area. In lake worth: Coffe Gallery Cafe. Delray Beach: Pineapple Grille. West Palm Beach: Kravis Center, Clematis Book Store, Governor's Club, Flagler Museum, etc.
Now he's composing music for string orchestra, piano, clavichenvalo and classical guitar.
