Details:
The press see her as "' ... a treasure ...'"; industry professionals refer to her as "'... an artist of uncommon talent and sensibility ... '"; Carlos Santana's description, "' ... her music reflects a strong, deep and honest commitment to life."' An accomplished performer, composer and educator who is the living example of a rich musical heritage, she is la Maestra, Marcia Migét.
A multi-instrumentalist (saxophone/piano/flute), composer, producer and educator, Marcia Migét is a musician whose most recent performances include 2005 African American Jazz Caucus Allstar Big Band at the International Association of Jazz Educators' Convention (and was the 2004 Featured Artist performing with the Historically Black Colleges' University Allstar Band); was the only female saxophonist/flutist with Anthony Brown and the Asian American Orchestra playing the Monterey, Stern Grove and Fillmore Jazz Festivals last year.
With skills that cross multiple genres most recently she's recorded with Dr. Anthony Brown and the Asian American Orchestra on his Gershwin project; her latest project-as-producer is Passing the Baton: the Miget-Redd Session Part 1; and performed with the Northern California Lighthouse Singers 25th Anniversary conducted by Helen Stevens and Stephen Roberts. In 2004 she performed with Wayne Wallace and Pete Escovedo at Vallejo's Jazz Festival.
A Member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences her performance pedigree includes multiple appearances with Carlos Santana, and such notables as Freddy Redd, Larry Ridley, Jimmy Cobb, Buddy Baker, Kenny Barron, Orestes Vilato, Frank Foster, Pete Escovedo, Donald Byrd, Garth Webber, Frank Martin, Rebeca Mauleon, Paul Von Wageningen, Jean-Michele Hueré, Tyrone Hill of Sun Ra's Arkestra, Anthony Brown and the Asian American Orchestra, Carl Perazzo, Harold Jones Big Band, Eddie Moore, Gary Brown, Joe Holiday, Dimitri Methany, Daria, Suzanne Cianni, Phish, Wayne Wallace, John Santos, John Handy, Babatunde Lea, Michael Spiro, Kelvin Scholar, Antwan Barrett, Montclair Women's Jazz Orchestra, Abel Sanchez, Jorge Santana and the SF Kids, Jaimeo Brown and Dartanyan Brown. Her band has opened for Chick Corea, Kenny Loggins, Phoebe Snow and she's performed on MTV with Rickie Lee Jones. She has been the featured performer with the James Cleveland Choir at the Gospel Music Workshop of America, in a 2003 Jam Session Tribute Oscar Peterson at the Toronto International Association of Jazz Educators Convention, and at the 2004 International Association of Jazz Educators' Convention New York performing with the Historically Black College's Allstar Band, the late Jimmy Coe and the African American Jazz Caucus Big Band.
Performances range the gamut of venues, e.g. Oakland Coliseum, Golden Gate/Stern Grove Concert Series, Monterey Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, International Association of Jazz Educator Conventions, Vallejo Jazz Festival, North Bay Italian Street Painting Festival, Fillmore Jazz Festival, Iowa Jazz and Blues Festival, Women in Jazz Festival, New York City Public Library's Schomburg Center, Shoreline Amphitheater, the Great American Music Hall and Yoshi's.
Having grown up in a family of musicians who performed extensively throughout the Midwest, on national television and radio, presenting special events and musical clinics is nothing new. Studying piano, saxophone and flute from a very early age, her talent and commitment to music were evidenced through numerous awards from classical music competitions.
The core impetus behind her music, its cross-genre influences and ethnic origins is her vast experience with a variety of styles including Latin, gospel, folk, and the American Classical artform know as, Jazz. Her latest projects involve elements of Afro-Latin and South American rhythms with contemporary urban grooves. A past Artist-in-Residence for the National Endowment of the Art's 'Jazz Artist in Schools' Program, her Bachelor of Music is from Drake University (in Flute and Piano Performance).
