acoustic based folk-pop. James Taylor meets Evan Dando.
5 MP3 Songs
FOLK: Folk Pop, POP: Folky Pop
Details:
As a kid, Mark Cool used to dance around the living room, singing along with his hand-me down collection of 45s;which included, the Beatles, Elvis, the Monkees, The Guess Who, The Hollies, The Stones, etc. He got alot of exposure to country music and especially Johnny Cash as those were his dad's favrites. It's a folk-pop thing with mark cool, folky because the primary elements in his music are acoustic guitar and intimate vocal style(a la evan dando, paul westerburg), and poppy, because he obviously relishes the song templates laid down by the Beatles, Buddy Holly, et. al.
Cool writes stories and love songs with compassion and a fresh, upbeat lyrical style; ("you with your Mona Lisa smile and eyes like a tigress, you invaded my soul like a virus" from Girl 4 me, or "he drove his old VW coast to coast, arrived breathless and starry eyed/ he was sure this old tinsel town would welcome him with arms open wide..." from foolish dreams)
Before going solo, Cool spent 6 or 7 years as a singer and guitar player in bands in L.A. and Upstate New York. (He's from Syracuse originally.) Since striking out on his own, he's released a 5-song EP, 'Mark Cool songs' ('99), and his first full-length recording, 'Dawn' (Feb./2001), both on his own Folk Star Recordings label.
