Heavy progressive alt-rock.
12 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Modern Rock, ROCK: Punk
Details:
The infamous last live show with John Maxwell on bass. Recorded by Ian Hunter (not of Mott the Hoople) as a live simulcast over CFRO in Vancouver. Ian had an ongoing project called "Tape-O-Mania" where cassette covers of upcoming shows were printed in a local magazine and bands gave formal permission for the performances to be taped as they were broadcast. The night Mary appeared, however, the sound engineer's equipment truck was stolen before he headed down to Ian Hunter's space to set up for the show. So this recording was essentially made by pointing two microphones at the band as they played, which accounts for the lo-fi quality of the recording. Nonetheless, the power and passion of Mary poke through the mids.
This was recorded after What Never Was was recorded, but was released before What Never Was (both as Tape-O-Mania and as an independent release). The majority of the songs were intended for a follow-up to What Never Was, but with the prospects of recordings a second album dwindling, the band decided to document these songs here "just in case." The result is a snapshot document of a time and place and feeling.
