1 Development Objectives
1-1 Product Concept
In autumn 2000, the PowerShot G1 was introduced to the market as a camera for the creative purposes of prosumers and for business applications where a wide range of shooting functions and high reliability are required. Advancements continued to be made starting with the PowerShot G2, featuring a 4.0-megapixel CCD and primary color filter, the PowerShot G3, featuring a 4x zoom lens and the DIGIC chip, and the PowerShot G5 with a 5.0-megapixel CCD, so that the PowerShot has become recognized as a leading digital camera in this category. The PowerShot G6 is an updated version of the PowerShot G5. The design and CCD have been completely revamped and a larger LCD monitor (2.0-inch) and a 9-point AiAF have been added, the first in the G series, for providing enhanced shooting functions. The CCD has approximately 7.1 effective megapixels in the camera unit to deliver the highest performance in the PowerShot G series with a body size that is more than 10% smaller than the PowerShot G5. The optical shooting system ha
s also optimized the 7.1-megapixel CCD for producing even clearer image quality compared to previous G series models. The AF also operates at a higher speed for providing better basic performance. Thus, the PowerShot G6's development concept is a new "G"eneration of compact cameras with the powerful features and high performance of the G series.
