Details:
Originally formed in 1999 by Guitarist Aaron Swanton & Twins Zachary & Joshua Wheeler (Bass/Drums) as an improv/jam band playing San Diego house parties & venues. This eventually lead to the stalking by acquaintance Gary Hankins, who would follow the band from show to show, stealing a mic & playing the role of front man. After time the group invited Hankins to join the band officially.
In a short time the group had put together a wealth of material that led to a recording session at Doubletime Studios, San Diego, with Jeff Forrest. In 3 days the group recorded a collection of songs that would soon propel the bands reputation for high energy, feral punk, funk & glam infused rock roll. The collection (now known as "Vulture") is laced with the groups obsessions of "in the moment" improvs, classic guitar riffs, psychic twin rhythms & an aggressive poetic vocal.
Shortly after this recording session the band took hiatus while Aaron Swanton moved North to San Francisco after the death of close friend Jay Lucky. In San Francisco Swanton worked to finish recordings of Lucky's synth project known as "Bankers". At this time the Twins formed the mystical "Glorfindel Trio" as a salute to Middle Earth, including instrumentation of mandolin, keyboard & drums.
The original Scarlet Symphony recordings by this time had circulated through the hands of friends & the San Diego underground. Reforming in 2002, the band attacked San Diego with a slew of performances ranging from venues, house parties, bridges as well as under the streets & into the sewers. The group built a stable following & nothing could slow them, except say a never denying a chance to perform the group was putting on the show 3-4 times weekly on a near 9 month stretch. During this time Scarlet Symphony went to record a new batch of songs in "The Box" at Ampersand Studios, San Diego with Mike Homer. This would round out the earlier recordings for the official release of "Vulture" on the bands own "Cat 9 Records" originally with handmade packaging & spray painted discs. Later the band would headline the "Destruction Party" at Ampersand Studios, a former church, celebrating the studios death- rumors have it that the demolition team gave their job credit to the party itself.
Interest from Los Angeles Major Labels was on the rise for Scarlet Symphony, while offered a handful of "Demo Deals" & playing "Label Showcases" the group quickly grew tired of the Hollywood Music Machine. Back at home in the band's new studio The Plastic Museum, the basement of a closed downtown bank, a new set of songs was filling out a set of 2 new EPs for the band, known as "Metal Mouth" & "Flower Press". A small hand made pressing of these two 3" discs was made available. "Vulture" was also released at this time in Japan on Cordova records which followed a Japanese tour spanning from Tokyo to Osaka.
After the stretch of Los Angeles based business & performances the band again decided to take yet another hiatus. During this time Hankins & Swanton developed "UV Tigers", a future rock/glam project releasing an EP, while Joshua & Zachary Wheeler formed "Society", an Afro-Beat endeavor, releasing an EP as well. The natural chemistry of Scarlet Symphony members would not keep them away for long. Late 2007 Scarlet Symphony was at it again, rented out their own studio space & began tracking for their new LP "Foundation", set to release late 2008.
Hailed for their ferocious live shows, followers have related the energy of their performance & sound to groups like The Pixies, The Clash, Patti Smith Group, Talking Heads, David Bowie & Iggy Pop. Also bizarre that the group is often compared to filmmakers- such as David Lynch & Kurosawa, describing the sound as a strange unfamiliar familiarity.
