âQuietly Raging,â the title of the new CD by Dakota Sid and Travers Clifford, offers a quiet guitar and mandolin as bedrock to lyrics of protest, local history, religion and Americana adventures.
Songs meander through the American landscape: Detroit City, New York, and Tennessee. âFolks out in Californiaâ¦living in the Sierra mountains / got beachfront property.â
Sid sings of cataclysmic fears with a sense of humor. âNuclear waste all over the place.â Religion is laced with skepticism. âIâm aâpraying to you Jesus, even though I donât believeâ¦.sometimes I just need to prayâ And he leaves us with his obituary: âJust leave my body on the mountain / feed the bears some grizzled meat.â
Songs reflect various subcultures. ââ¦you tried to kick that biker and got your foot caught in the spokes.â And pose philosophical observations. âWeâre never here to pick the crop, we only plant the seed.â
One song is about his âbeat up back road carâ called âSally.â But heâs never far from a social comment. âLook at that air so plain to see. / That ainât the way air used to be.â
Thereâs a consistent whimsical tone here. âI donât care much for sushi, or tubs full of folks in birthday suits. / Iâd just as soon be howlinâ at the moon in my jeans and cowboy boots.â
The songs are deceptively simple. He follows monosyllable words with a polysyllabic double whammy ââ¦wet boots and underwear. Incriminating evidence.â
His socially conscious similes sparkle with imagery. ââ¦.wallowing like a seabird in the Exxon oil spill.â
He sings about his local history. âThe Ballad of Wild Bill Ebaugh,â sounds more like a fascinating documentary than a country tune.
